Before her talk at SMC we asked her a few questions about herself, and about building community.

A little bit about Veronica . . .
Veronica is a technology and gaming-centric video host based in San Francisco. Currently her projects include Qore (a monthly interactive magazine about the PS3 for Sony) and Tekzilla (a weekly tech help and how-to show on Revision3.com), along with a bi-weekly column on MaximumPC.com. She’s worked worked as a producer and on-air talent for CNET Networks (now CBS Interactive). A social-networking junkie (with almost 1.5 million Twitter followers), Veronica has been a speaker at South by Southwest and New Media Expo, among other national tech events.

Why is a passionate community important?
Anyone can create a Facebook or Twitter account, but you’re not going to create a true community unless you put the extra effort into it. A passionate community wants to be involved — they care about your product and feel like they have a personal connection with the brand. When other people are evangelizing your brand for you outside of the company, it’s a lot more meaningful.

When did you first realize the importance of a passionate community?
Probably when I was a producer for the podcast Buzz Out Loud at CNET. We knew we had the good numbers for the show, but when people started creating comic books about it, drinking games, Photoshop contests… well, we knew we had something really special on our hands, and the type of passionate community that wasn’t typical of the CNET audience.

What are some first steps to building and recruiting a community?
Being prepared to put the time into it! It can be a full-time job for one or more people, depending on the size of the company. I spend upwards of 4 hours a day just maintaining my various networks online. You can’t be passively involved.

What is a common mistake brands make in building or relating to their community?
The soapbox syndrome, as I like to think of it. Companies just regurgitate PR stuff into their Twitter streams, and it never feels authentic. People are following your brand because they want to see a different, more personal side of it.

Is there a good way to deal with the trolls/haters entering your community?
If your community is strong enough, they’ll often take care of it for you. But there are usually two responses that I tend to give to trolls: Either you completely ignore them (until they get bored) or you respond to them directly, and in a very non-confrontational manner. Half the time they’re just looking for any kind of response at all, and once they get it they stop bothering. Other times, they’re just looking to get a rise out of you.

What do you hope people learn from your talk?
I hope people learn that although it’s very easy to get started with social networking for your brand, it can be a much bigger time investment than they might think. You have to put way more out there than you can expect to get back.

Businesses often overlook the value of using social media tools and practices inside an organization. It is time to gather and get educated on how we can use social media within our organizations to connect, enhance and build relationships.

After a very successful first event, SMCSeattle Education Series presents the second session – Social Media in the Enterprise, with a brilliant selection of people – Ethan Yarbrough, Paolo Tosolini and Charl Pearce !

The “Social Media In The Enterprise” talk and panel will take place on Thursday, September 17th, 6 p.m. at Allyis, Inc in Kirkland. It promises to be a very enlightening session, so be sure to register before it fills up!

Why Social Media IN the Enterprise?

As individuals we use social media every day to listen, to connect, to build relationships and build trust. Increasingly, businesses are realizing that they can use social media to achieve these same benefits in their marketing and promotion efforts. Often overlooked, however, are the benefits that a business can experience when it allows social media tools inside the firewall to enhance listening and communication between management and employees, to improve employees’ ability to discover and connect with expertise within the organization, to establish and nurture relationships within the company that foster greater trust, improved knowledge sharing, better collaboration, and faster innovation.

In this session, we’ll look at the changing landscape of the workplace and how social media is both supporting and accelerating those changes. Areas of focus will include:

- Is your organization ready for internal social media? How to tell, how to get ready

- Making the case for internal social media to your management

- Determining ROI for social media applications inside the enterprise

- Three key benefits of social networking behind the firewall

- Integrating internal and external social media strategies

- Examples of internal social media in action

Is it any wonder then that nonprofit organizations see such promise in online social networks? The new tools of social media offer them inexpensive opportunities to rapidly increase the reach of their messages and have the potential to help their causes reach the critical human mass necessary to really make a difference.

That’s just the first paragraph of a great post by Ethan Yarbrough. He talks about his three biggest takeaways from the “Social Media for Social Good” Education session, plus adds in analysis and examples of his own.

The SMCSeattle Education Series kicks off with the our first session, “Social Media For Social Good”, on Monday, August 10th, at 6 p.m. at the Windermere Education Facility.

This event is limited to just 35 people, so register soon!

Did you know non-profit organizations are the fastest adopting market segment for social media? Do you know about how non-profits in the Puget Sound Region have been using social media? Do you want to learn about how you can take these lessons and apply them to your organization?

Come and learn from a great set of people who have been immersed in the world of non-profits and social media.

We are excited to present an introductory talk by Jeris JC Miller (aka @dakini_3). She’ll cover the latest study on social media usage by charities and talk about best practices from NPO social media thought leaders. The talk will be followed by a panel of interesting and very experienced people from various backgrounds in Social Media and non-profit work. In keeping with the Seattle social media community’s “Summer of Love and Social Good” theme, the education program on August 10th will focus on social media for social good. It will showcase Commerce-Cojoining-Compassion initiatives (#3Cs), NPO foundations, and businesses that actively incorporate new media, Web 2.0, and social media channels into their organizations.

Special thanks to The EDGE Group for sponsoring the space for the event!

Here is a quick introduction to the experts that will lead the discussion and the panel on August 10th.

Jeris JC Miller‘s background includes working with Dr. Jerome Kagan, a developmental psychology pioneer and Principal Investigator of the Harvard Infant Study & Director of the New England Node of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Network on Human Development. Her technology background includes work at Bolt, Beranek and Newman (BBN Technologies; BBN Communications Group) which installed the first network node between UCLA , UC Santa Cruz and the University of Utah (DARPA, ARPANET project); acting as a Program Manager for Rapid Deployment Web Development projects at Intel, and as a Business Analyst for Microsoft. She writes the Heart of Matter Blog for Seattle Social Media Profiles which focuses on NPO initiatives with ties to the Seattle and Puget Sound Region.

Shauna Causey Shauna Causey is as the Communications Director for Social Media Club Seattle (SMC Seattle) and Comcast. She also serves on four non-profit boards and started Voluntweetup events where social media enthusiasts organize events to train non-profits on effective uses of social media. In her spare time, she interviews Seattle-area startups for Seattle 2.0 TV and is helping to plan Gnomedex and Twestival Seattle.

Adnan Azfar Mahmud is the founder of Jolkona Foundation. Jolkona Foundation uses social media to effectively reach out to its supporters and to keep them abreast of what’s happening in the organization. As a non-profit startup, Jolkona Foundation has scarce “advertising” dollars. Instead they extensively use social media to engage their user base.

We will also have a number of non-profits and consultants from companies represented at the event. Come prepared with your thoughts and questions!

If you want to send questions for the panel in advance, please do so in the comments section below or email them to education@smcseattle.com

Register early, this event is limited to just 35 people.

Please park on the street. The facility closes before the event ends!

Gnomedex Topic: Glaser will be presenting “Hacker-Journalists in Demand at Media Companies” – Why did media companies miss the boat on the web? They haven’t always valued the input from their own technology folks on staff. That’s changing as the web is becoming an important source for news and information. So now local newspapers, radio stations and TV stations are hoping that a new breed of “hacker journalists” can help them out by having experience in coding and also understanding journalism issues.

Gnomedex Topic: We’ve all seen them, documentaries built on boring, lifeless interviews. We’ve all read them, profiles that don’t even hint at the motives of the person behind the story. During this program Warren offers structures, tips and strategies to turn mundane questioning into the art of interviewing.

Gnomedex Topic: Case will be talking about the strangeness of humans and our prosthetic culture. From the traditional prosthetics like the fake legs which amputees wear, to the prosthetization of our own tasks with virtual assistants and the 4 hour work week, to the idea that cell phones make give us superpowers. And finally, omnipresence and omniscience through social networking sites.

Fortunately for us, we can use our technical skills to evaluate and implement today’s life extension techniques, some of which can be fun — at least from a geek perspective.

Today, a culture of sharing and collaboration is changing the face of technology–enabling the development of things like affordable 3d printing that put the tools of personal manufacturing on your desktop. In the future when you reminisce, your kids won’t believe that there was a time when you had to leave h ome to get things instead of downloading objects.

SMCSea Ed Series consists of a series of smaller (less than 50 people), more focused events around social media education. The first is "Social Media for Social Good". It's for anyone in the non-profit space looking to learn and share best practices on growing awareness and outreach of their organization through social media.

The Social Media Club was established with the following mission(s):
1. Expand Media Literacy
2. Share Lessons Learned Among Practitioners
3. Encourage Adoption of Industry Standards
4. Promote Ethical Practices through Discussion and Actions

At SMC Seattle, we understand that while networking is an important part of the social media space, we really need to focus on learning and education in order to work towards the real mission of The Social Media Club. SMC Seattle has had several large events this year that have been really popular – where people have met each other, learned from one another and evolved in the social media scene. While this has been great, a number of people have requested events focused on deeper learning on specific topics. We thought about it, and we did it! It is therefore time to announce the launch of SMCSeattle Ed Series – a local effort to fulfill social media related educational needs in the Seattle area.

WHAT IS “SMCSEA ED SERIES”?

SMCSea Ed Series consists of a series of smaller (less than 50 people) and more focused events around social media education. SMC Seattle will continue to have our largely successful monthly events but will introduce smaller events for those interested in learning more.

SMCSea Ed consists of @thinkmaya (Maya Bisineer) @patrickbyers (Patrick Byers) and YOU. SMCSea Ed is all about bringing social media educators, practitioners, consultants and students together around specific topics about social media. Social media is a vast space spanning several niches and disciplines. Moreover, social media is an ever-evolving discipline all by itself. The only way to keep updated is to keep teaching people what we know about our fields and keep learning from the people who know more about social media in their own fields. SMCSeattle Ed has a goal to do just that – conduct learning events such as presentations, discussion groups, panels, tutorials and hands-on workshops to make that possible. Over time, we have a goal of sharing everything that is taught and everything we learn through these events right here, on this blog!

HOW DO I GET INVOLVED?

There are a number of ways in which YOU can get involved with SMCSeattle Education. Here are a few ideas –

1. First and foremost, please complete this very brief survey for us

2. If you are in the social media space and want to share what you know, what you have learned and so on, be sure to email education@smcseattle.com with your name, contact information, area of expertise and what you would like to host for SMCSea Education

3. If you want to learn about social media, be sure to email education@smcseattle.com with your name, contact information, area of expertise and what you would like to learn from others at SMCSeattle. You may be as broad or as specific as you like!

4. If you would like to share some powerpoints or educational material related to social media, be sure to email us at education@smcseattle.com. We would LOVE to share your material and we will whenever appropriate (on the blog, in the events etc). We WILL give you credit for your work, but please remember that SMCSeattle is about education first and then YOU

5. Spread the word. Come join us at our events, share and learn!

Our very first session is called Social Media For Social Good – An Introduction. We are targeting the last week of July. It is turning out to be a great session, so be sure to come by and participate if you are anyone that works in the non-profit space. We will try to have a blog post before and after every event, so be sure to check out the blog for updates.

For quick input, do not forget we are right at your fingertips @thinkmaya (Maya) and @patrickbyers (Patrick Byers). We’d love to work with you!
